When to Change Oil?

Oil changes are an essential part of routine maintenance. Wondering when to change your oil? Our team at Peacock Chrysler Jeep Dodge Ram FIAT Hilton Head can help you establish guidelines for doing so.

With regular oil changes, you can help keep your engine in top condition. Drive safer and more efficiently on the roads of Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head Island! Read on below to discover our tips for when to get an oil change.

The 6-Month/6,000-Mile Rule of Thumb

Let's start by stating the obvious: Every car is different. Depending on the oil you use, the car you drive, and the road habits you practice, oil change intervals will differ, too. That's why it's always best to consult your vehicle's maintenance schedule. You can often find it in the vehicle owner's manual.

However, changing your engine oil every six months or 6,000 miles is an excellent rule of thumb. Bi-annual oil changes will help ensure that your engine parts stay well-lubricated. If you use synthetic oil, you may be able to go even longer-up to 15,000 miles, in select vehicles.

If you frequently find yourself on dirt roads or in stop-and-go traffic, however, more frequent oil changes may be necessary. Learn about how often oil changes may be needed for your vehicle!

Dashboard Oil Change Light or Message

In many cars, you'll get a Change Engine Oil Soon message on your driver information center. This readout is reset by the mechanic who handles your oil changes. Typically, it measures distance (miles) and not the actual condition of your oil, so you don't want to over-rely on it.

Many dashboard warning lights can also indicate that you need an oil change. You may see the Oil Pressure or Check Engine light aglow. However, these lights can signal a wide range of problems. You should always perform a diagnostic test to confirm that the oil is indeed the issue.

If you see any of these indicators, check the physical condition of your oil. You should do this at least once a month as a precautionary measure.

Black & Gritty Oil? It's Time for a Change

The above-mentioned strategies are great guidelines. Sometimes, however, guidelines need to be broken. To truly know when to change your oil, you'll need to perform a physical check. Make sure your car is on level ground and the engine is off before you check the oil.

Remove the oil dipstick and wipe it clean with a lint-free cloth. Then, reinsert it for a few seconds before removing it again. You'll want to (1) check the oil level and (2) check the oil condition.

Fresh oil is amber in color and fluid in consistency. If your oil is black and gritty, get an oil change ASAP. If the oil looks fresh but seems low (i.e., the oil mark is below the minimum fill line), top off your oil, and you're good to go!
